The Need: Mental health and suicide prevention
The national picture:
- 1 in 8 men will experience depression at some stage in their lives.[1]
- 1 in 5 men will experience anxiety at some stage in their lives.[2]
- Men are less likely to talk about depression or anxiety, increasing the risk it goes unrecognised and untreated.
- Sadly, around three-quarters of suicide deaths are men.[3]
MensLine Australia plays a vital role in mental health and suicide prevention support by providing an accessible phone and online counselling service dedicated to men. Offering a nonjudgmental, compassionate service can significantly improve men’s confidence in seeking support. MensLine Australia is often the first touchpoint for men reaching out for help, which can be a gateway to accessing longer-term support.
MensLine Australia aims to reduce the stigma around seeking support, raise awareness of the service, and encourage men to seek help. Taking the first step to reach out for help is a sign of strength.
