What happens in the Changing for Good program?

Lasting behavioural change takes time, commitment and effort.

Changing for Good understands that upon the completion of a Men’s Behaviour Change Program (MBCP) for domestic or family violence, many men are still concerned about relapse. Our purpose is to continue to support men and their partners, for a further 12-months, after successful completion of an initial MBCP.


What is Changing for Good?

Changing for Good is a behavior change maintenance program. The aim of the program is to provide ongoing support and resources to help men make and sustain changes in violent or abusive attitudes and behaviours.

This telephone based counselling program is free and voluntary.


How does the program work?

Once an application is received, an applicant is contacted, and a comprehensive assessment is conducted to determine their suitability for the program. A condition of being accepted into the program is successful completion of a MBCP and provision of the contact details for the victim of the client’s violence.

Stage one

For the first two months, the client receives weekly counselling sessions, alternating between the male and female counsellors, as is standard practice in MBCPs. In the earlier stages of the program, the focus is on building connection and understanding, establishing self-awareness, self-care strategies and practical issues like child access, if needed.

Education is provided around setting and trigger events, emotional regulation, regular self-checks on anger levels and other emotions, support systems and strategies.  Referrals to other services like parenting courses may be made, if required.

After two months, if the client is progressing well, the frequency of the sessions changes to fortnightly. Partners receive fortnightly calls for the first two months and then monthly over the 12-month period.

Throughout the entire process, risk is assessed during every contact to ensure ongoing protection of the man’s partner and any children, but also to provide a measure of progress.

Stage two

Depending on the participant’s needs and progress, the focus may then switch to awareness of others. This could involve education on communication, valuing difference, acceptance, tolerance, conflict resolution, risk management and relationship building. Counsellors will work with the client to look at strengths and barriers, to identify the unique areas that need attention.

This stage is often one where greater personal insight is gained. With this knowledge, more informed and personalized strategies can be developed to help participants continue their journey of personal growth. Ongoing support helps identify common issues that contribute to violent behaviours and attitudes, and helps build strategies to deal with them in constructive ways.

Stage three

After these two early stages, many participants will have a different perspective on their partner, or ex-partner and have more awareness of the impact of their behavior on others.  Often there is a shift in worldview away from conflict to a more cooperative position that can help to foster healthier and happier relationships with friends, partners, ex-partners and children.

In stage three, the program moves into seeing the issue and behaviors behind violence in the broader societal context.  With the benefit of several months of work and education behind them, many participants are now more aware of the signs of these attitudes in others and how they can impact society.

At the end of the program the goal is for participants to be confident that they will not use violence in their family or with partners again, and show the corresponding behavior and attitude shifts that indicate that the change in their lives is sustainable.


How to enter into the program?

Upon successful completion of a MBCP, you can apply to enter into the Changing for Good program. The application form may be available through your MBCP facilitator, or can be found on Changing for Good here.

Once submitted, one of our counsellors will contact to you to assess your suitability and eligibility for entry into the program.
